Contemporary SIPs Self Build, Lancashire
With three previous renovation projects under their belt, Adam and Edith decided that the time was right to build their own home from scratch. Using part of the ¾ acre plot of their existing home, they set about building a four bed SIPs home with detached double garage, for themselves and their three dogs.
Plumber Adam had been inspired by the many different homes he’d worked in and knew they wanted the largest house they could build on the land they had, which also included a newly purchased parcel of land bought from their neighbours.
The couple wanted an energy efficient, modern house, that suited their lifestyle, was quick to build and would maximise the space available, so building with SIPs was the perfect solution.
One of the many benefits of SIPs construction is the predictable build programme and with the installation of the SIPs structure taking just two weeks, follow on trades were able to begin work more or less immediately. Adam and Edith project managed the build and the speedy SIPs installation meant that first and second fixes were up and running in no time.
Self-designed by Adam, the 80sqm, three storey SIPs home has an impressive hallway, with a full height stairwell that has been left open right to the eaves. There is a large triple storey window that floods the entrance hall and stairwell with lots of daylight.
Unlike traditional methods of construction that require roof trusses, SIPs roofs are supported by Glulam beams and when left open to the eaves can create impressive design features, just like this full height stairwell and glazing.
With high ceilings throughout the new home, the bedrooms have exposed beams that add character and charm to the build. There are two en-suite bedrooms with the master having a bespoke built in floating bed.
Adam and Edith also wanted to ensure that their super-efficient SIPs house, used the latest eco-technology, so opted to install a heat recovery and air source heat pump.
With the help of friends and family, Adam and Edith’s three storey home took just over 12 months to complete. And now, driving into the property, along the sweeping driveway and seeing the fabulous window in front, is a dream come true for the couple.
