A brand new housing development is underway in York where 11 high performance homes are being built using a Structural Insulated Panels building system (SIPs) – the next generation of timber based construction.
Working with developer Arncliffe Homes, Skipton based SIPS@Clays, who design, fabricate and install the Kingspan TEK™ Building System for developers and self-builders alike, has supplied the SIPs system for Arncliffe’s latest development off Tadcaster Road.
In a first for Arncliffe Homes, who are using the system as an alternative to traditional breeze block construction, the new SIPs development will deliver a mix of eco-efficient three, four and five bedroomed homes.
The new homes will benefit from the superior energy efficiency that is inherent within the SIPs system. This, together with speed of build, minimal waste, maximised internal space and efficiency of build programme, means that developers like Arncliffe Homes are now recognising the advantages of building with SIPs.
Ian Clay, Partner, SIPS@Clays said: “Arncliffe Homes is a well-established organisation offering a premium product, so we are delighted to be working with them on their first SIPs development in York.
“SIPS construction is becoming increasingly popular with developers who, just like Arncliffe Homes, want to compare how this modern method of construction really stacks up against traditional construction methods.
“The benefits of SIPs - especially The Kingspan TEK™ Building System, which is approved by NHBC and exceeds the levels of efficiency demanded by building regulations, are persuading more and more developers to embrace SIPs construction”.

Michael Stafford, Managing Director, Arncliffe Homes said: “Arncliffe Homes has been developing premium homes for nearly thirty years and we have always used traditional methods of construction.
“We are continually reviewing our approach to ensure we utilise the most efficient and productive methods of construction and following extensive research we have decided to embrace modern methods of construction and use SIPs at our York development.
“We approached SIPS@Clays to provide the Structural Insulated Panels following a recommendation from our architects, Pearce Bottomley LLP, who have previous experience with SIPs construction. With the first six properties now being erected on site we can really begin to assess how SIPs can help us to bring our latest development to the market in the most efficient way".
The new development off Tadcaster Road, York is due for completion in early 2020.
