One of our projects has been featured on the Homebuilding & Renovating blog. The article highlights the benefits of SIPs with reference to an energy-efficient self build we worked on in Bedfordshire using the SIPs building system.
As part of a larger eco self-build project, George and Sue Davies were looking to install a 15m rear garage wall. The narrow plot adjoined their neighbours’ boundary, so it was essential that the build would cause minimal inconvenience and disruption whilst making the most of the available space.
Why the SIPs Building System?
After a quick brainstorm, the second-time self-builders decided that the SIPs build system would be the best solution to meet their needs. As George explains, ‘SIPs would allow the rear wall to be built and rendered out of position, and craned into its final place.’
Other benefits would include exceptional airtightness and insulation, rapid construction time and the potential to have vaulted ceilings upstairs, providing a light and airy feel. In addition, the comparatively minimal wall thickness of SIPs would maximise internal floor space.
George and Sue settled on SIPS@Clays because we offered the best price for their project, and because we use the Kingspan TEK building system. This is a BBA-approved product with standard panel thickness, which surprisingly is not always the case with build systems of this kind.
You can follow the couple’s progress on their blog, which documents the construction of their self-build eco cottage in a series of snapshots.
